How to uninstall McAfee agent?

McAfee Agent is the client side software to facilitate communication between ePolicy Orchestrator and other managed products. It can be used by the users to manage McAfee products. The  ePolicy Orchestrator extension and numerous client side packages constitute McAfee agent. McAfee Agent can be used to manage updates, logins, events reporting, event properties, task schedules, communication, policy storages, product deployment and many more such tasks. Sometimes the users may feel the need to uninstall McAfee agent. This need may arise in certain cases when it is not working properly.

Some of the reasons required for uninstallation are:
  • Mismatched files due to failed upgrades which disables forced uninstall.
  • Prevent McAfee services in VirusScan Enterprise (VSE) 8.5i and later is not working properly.
  • Previous versions of McAfee agent contains corrupted files.
  • Conflicts with other third party software.

Then you can go through the steps mentioned below to remove the McAfee antivirus.

Disable McAfee services protection in VSE.

Disable Access Protection feature locally or by using ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO).

Go to Start > Programs > McAfee > VirusScan Console.

Right click on the Access Protection button and select Properties option.

Deselect the option Prevent McAfee services from being stopped.

Click  on the Apply button.

Close VirusScan console.

Run frminst.exe /forceuninstall in the command prompt:

Type either one of the commands below:

"c:\Program Files\Network Associates\Common Framework\frminst.exe" /forceuninstall

"c:\Program Files\McAfee\Common Framework\frminst.exe" /forceuninstall

Restart your system to complete the uninstallation process.

Open registry in your computer.

Browse to the key

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\McAfeeFramework]

Double-click on the Start value.

Set the Value data to 4.

Restart your computer.

Open Task Manager and browse to the Processes option.

Select the processes McTray.exe, naPrdMgr.exe, UdaterUI.exe, and choose the option to End Process.

Close your Task Manager.

Navigate to

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services]

Right click on McAfeeFramework sub-key and delete it.

Browse to the keys

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSetXXX\Services]

 Delete these key if it exists.

Go to the keys

32-bit operating systems: 

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Network Associates\TVD\Shared Components\Framework]

64-bit operating systems: 
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Network Associates\TVD\Shared Components\Framework]

Jot down the Installed Path and Data Path values.

Remove the folders available in the above registry.

Go to

32-bit operating systems: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Network Associates\TVD\Shared Components]

64-bit operating systems: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Network Associates\TVD\Shared Components]

Delete the Framework sub-key.

Browse to

32-bit operating systems: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\McAfee\McTray]

64-bit operating systems: 

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\McAfee\McTray]

Select and delete McTray.

Go to

32-bit operating systems: 

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\]

64-bit operating systems: 

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\]

Delete the appropriate subkey.

Hence your McAfee Agent is uninstalled. In case of any problem feel free to call McAfee customer support number and get the problem fixed by the experts where they will help you fix the problem via remote access.
